Rectangular Pit: V = L × W × D Trench: V = L × W × D Trapezoidal (sloped): V = D × (B + B + 2×S×D) / 2 × L Where S = side slope ratio (H:V), B = bottom width
Excavation is measured in cubic metres (m³) in India for billing purposes. The rate is applied per m³ of excavated soil. Some contracts specify loose measurement (after excavation) which can be 20–30% more than compacted measurement.
For a typical residential building in India, foundation excavation depth ranges from 1.0 to 1.8 metres depending on soil bearing capacity. In black cotton soil areas, deeper excavation up to 2.5m may be required to reach stable soil.
