Concrete shrinks and expands with temperature changes. Without joints, random cracking occurs. Control joints create planned weak points where cracks form in a straight line.
Contraction joints are saw-cut grooves controlling shrinkage. Expansion joints are full-depth gaps with compressible filler allowing the slab to expand without buckling.
