BBS Formulas

Weight of Bar (kg) = D² × L × 0.00617 / 1000 × 1000
Simplified: Weight (kg/m) = D² × 0.00617 / 100 × 100

Hook Addition = 9d per hook (standard 180° hook)
Cutting Length = Clear Length + (9d × No. of hooks)
12mm dia, 3.5m length, 2 hooks, 10 bars:
Hook addition = 2 × 9 × 0.012 = 0.216m
Cutting Length = 3.5 + 0.216 = 3.716m
Weight/m = 12² × 0.00617 = 0.888 kg/m
Total = 0.888 × 3.716 × 10 = 33.0 kg

Steel Weight Formula (D²L/162)

The popular formula used on site: Weight (kg) = D² × L / 162 where D is in mm and L is total length in metres. This gives weight in kg for mild steel bars.

Frequently Asked Questions

A BBS is a detailed document listing all reinforcement bars in an RCC structure — showing bar mark, diameter, shape code, cutting length, number of bars, and total weight. It is prepared by structural engineers for every RCC element.
Cutting Length = Clear Span + (9d × number of hooks) − (2d × number of 90° bends). For a 12mm bar with 2 standard hooks: add 2 × 9 × 12mm = 216mm = 0.216m to the clear span.
Weight = D² × 0.00617 = 12 × 12 × 0.00617 = 0.888 kg/m. For a standard 12-metre bar: 0.888 × 12 = 10.67 kg per bar.
Standard wastage allowance is 3–5% for cutting and bending losses. Our calculator uses 5% by default which is the standard accepted by most structural consultants in India.
